Artificial Intelligence, often shortened to “AI”, is something you may have heard about more and more in recent years. It can sound complicated, even a little intimidating, but in reality, many people are already using it in everyday life without realising.

This guide explains what AI is, how it can be useful, and how you can use it in simple and practical ways.

What is AI?

AI is a type of technology that allows computers and devices to learn, recognise patterns and respond in helpful ways.

In simple terms, it helps machines “think” in a way that supports people.

You might already be using AI when you:

Ask a phone to tell you the weather

Use voice assistants like Siri or Alexa

Watch suggested programmes on TV

Use maps or directions on your phone

AI works quietly in the background to make these tools easier to use.

Why AI can be helpful

AI is designed to make everyday tasks simpler. For many people, it can help with:

Staying connected – writing messages or emails more easily

Finding information – answering questions quickly

Saving time – helping with small daily tasks

Building confidence online – offering step-by-step guidance

It can be especially useful if you are new to technology, as it can explain things in a clear and patient way.

Simple ways to try AI

You do not need any special equipment to start using AI. If you have a smartphone, tablet or computer, you already have access to it.

Here are a few easy ways to begin:

1. Ask questions

You can type a question into an AI tool such as Chatgpt or Claude and receive a clear answer.

For example:

“How do I send an email?”

“What buses go to Plymouth city centre?”

“What is a good recipe for soup?”

2. Help with writing

AI can also help you write messages, letters or even shopping lists.

You might ask:

“Help me write a birthday message”

“Write a short note to my neighbour”

3. Get step-by-step help

If you are unsure how to do something online, AI can guide you through it.

For example:

“How do I use WhatsApp?”

“How do I book a GP appointment online?”

It can break things down into simple steps.

Staying safe when using AI

While AI can be very helpful, it is still important to stay cautious.

A few simple rules to stay safe:

Never share personal or financial information

Double-check important information, especially around money or health with other reputable sources.

If something does not feel right, ask someone you trust

Think of AI as a helpful guide, but not a replacement for professional advice.

A gentle reminder

Learning something new later in life can feel like a challenge, but it can also be rewarding. With a little time and curiosity, AI can become a helpful way to stay informed, connected and confident.

At Plymouth Charity Trust, we believe in supporting independence in all its forms, including helping people feel more comfortable with the digital world.

Plymouth has always been a city shaped by community. From its historic waterfront to the neighbourhoods that grew around its dockyards and industries, the city has long been home to people supporting one another through changing times.

One tradition that reflects this spirit of community care is the almshouse.

Almshouses have existed in England for hundreds of years. They were originally created as charitable homes for people who needed somewhere safe and secure to live, particularly older people who had fallen on difficult circumstances.

These homes were often founded by local benefactors who wanted to give something back to their communities. In many towns and cities across the country, almshouses became a lasting part of the local landscape.

Plymouth is no exception.

One of the most significant figures in Plymouth’s charitable history was Elize Hele, a lawyer and philanthropist who lived in the early 17th century. Through his charitable work, he helped establish a legacy of providing housing and support for those in need.

His vision helped shape what would later become Plymouth Charity Trust, an organisation that continues to provide affordable homes for older people in the city today.

More than 400 years later, that original purpose still guides the work of the Trust.

Monument to Elize Hele, Bovey Tracey Church

While the idea of almshouses has ancient roots, the way they operate today has evolved with the times.

Modern almshouse accommodation offers residents their own private living spaces, typically self-contained flats with kitchens and bathrooms. Residents live independently, while still being part of a supportive community environment.

For many people, this combination of independence and reassurance can make a significant difference to everyday life.

A continuing part of Plymouth’s story

Plymouth has changed dramatically over the centuries. The city has seen periods of growth, wartime destruction, rebuilding and renewal. Through all of these changes, community organisations have continued to play an important role in supporting local people.

Charities, community groups and local services all contribute to the network of support that helps people live well in the city.

Almshouses remain one small but important part of that picture.

Today, organisations such as Plymouth Charity Trust continue to adapt to the needs of modern communities. By maintaining historic housing, developing new accommodation and working alongside other local charities, the Trust aims to ensure that people in Plymouth can continue to access safe and affordable homes.

While the city continues to grow and change, the idea behind community housing remains the same: providing stability, dignity and a place to call home.

And in Plymouth, that tradition has been part of the city’s story for centuries.

The early months of the year can feel surprisingly difficult. Christmas has passed, the weather is still cold, and spring can feel a long way off. If you find yourself feeling flat, unmotivated or simply “not quite yourself”, you are not alone.

There is a good reason this time of year feels challenging, and it has nothing to do with personal failure or lack of positivity.

January Was Not Always the New Year

For much of history in Britain, the new year did not begin in January at all. It officially started in March, when the days became noticeably longer and life began to move outdoors again.

Winter was seen as a time for rest, waiting and getting through the darker months, not for fresh starts or big expectations. In many ways, our bodies and minds still follow this older rhythm, even if the calendar does not.

So if January and February feel slow or heavy, that is entirely natural.

The Light Is Returning, Even If It’s Subtle

Here in Plymouth, we begin gaining daylight from late December onwards. At first, the change is small and easy to miss. Each afternoon stretches just a little longer than the last.

This gradual return of light can gently affect mood, energy and sleep, even if it takes time to notice. Spring does not arrive all at once. It arrives in small steps.

Sometimes simply knowing that change is already happening can be comforting.

A Season for Gentleness, Not Pressure

Modern life often encourages us to treat January as a time for productivity and transformation. But winter has always been a quieter season.

This can be a time to:

move at a slower pace

keep routines simple

focus on what feels steady and familiar

allow yourself to rest without guilt

There is no need to feel cheerful or ambitious right now. Waiting is not wasted time. It is part of the year’s natural rhythm.

Small Ways to Support Yourself Through Winter

You do not need to overhaul your routine to feel a little better. Gentle, manageable steps can help you move through this season with more ease.

That might mean:

stepping outside during daylight, even briefly

keeping in touch with familiar people

noticing small seasonal changes around you

allowing yourself quiet days without judgement

These are not solutions to rush the season away, but ways to meet it where it is.

Looking Ahead

Spring will arrive. The light will continue to grow, and with it often comes a little more energy, colour and movement. Until then, it is enough to take things one day at a time.

At Plymouth Charity Trust, we understand the importance of stability, reassurance and community through every season. Supporting people through quieter times is just as important as celebrating the brighter ones.

If this time of year feels hard, you are not doing anything wrong. You are simply living through winter.

1. Spiced Orange and Cinnamon DecorationsThese natural decorations look beautiful on a tree, hung in a window or placed in a bowl as

festive potpourri. They are simple to make and fill your home with a gentle Christmas scent.

You will need

• 2 oranges

• String or ribbon

• A handful of whole cloves

• 1 or 2 cinnamon sticks

• A baking tray and oven

How to make it

1. Slice the oranges into thin rounds and place them on a baking tray.

2. Dry them in the oven at a low heat (about 120°C) for 2 to 3 hours, turning them

halfway through. They should be firm and slightly crisp.

3. Once cool, make a small hole at the top of each slice and thread through string or

ribbon.

4. Decorate by pushing whole cloves into the orange or tying on a piece of cinnamon

stick.

5. Hang them up or arrange them in a bowl.

They add warmth, colour and a cosy Christmas feel without costing much at all.

2. Handmade Christmas Cards

A thoughtful card always means more when it is made by hand. These are quick, charming

and fun to personalise and a great activity for any ages!

You will need

• Plain card or thick paper

• Glue stick

• Scissors

• Scrap paper, old magazines or wrapping paper

• A pen or felt tip

How to make it

1. Fold the card in half.

2. Cut shapes from scrap paper such as trees, stars or simple stripes.

3. Arrange the pieces on the front of the card and glue them in place.

4. Add a festive message or note inside.

5. Leave to dry before standing upright.

You can make a whole set of cards in under an hour. They are easy to post and wonderful to give.

How ever you chose to spend your Christmas, Plymouth Charity Trust wishes you a very happy and healthy festive season.

As the days grow shorter and the evenings longer, it’s natural to feel a little more tired, reflective, or even low in mood. At Plymouth Charity Trust, we understand that mental and emotional wellbeing are just as important as physical health, especially during the colder, darker months. Our mission has always been to support older residents in Plymouth with safe, comfortable homes, and that support extends to helping people stay connected, active, and positive, whatever the season.

Autumn and winter can bring practical challenges: colder weather, shorter days, and less time outdoors. These changes can affect mood, motivation, and energy levels, and for older people living alone, it can sometimes feel isolating. Emotional wellbeing is about feeling balanced, connected, and able to cope with life’s changes, and it plays a critical role in overall health.

Having a stable, safe home, like the ones we provide at Heles Terrace, Lanyon House, (and soon to be at Grenville House) gives residents the foundation to maintain wellbeing. Knowing that your living environment is secure allows you to focus on the things that enrich life your hobbies and friendships.

Plymouth Charity Trusts Tips for Maintaining Mental Wellbeing in Autumn and Winter

Stay Connected
Even a short phone call to a neighbour can make a difference. If you live in one of our communities, our wardens and staff are always around for a friendly chat or to help you access local groups and activities.

Keep Active
Gentle exercise, whether it’s a walk along Plymouth Hoe, stretching at home, or indoor mobility exercises, helps both body and mind. Activity can improve mood, reduce stress, and increase energy.

Engage Your Mind
Reading, puzzles, or learning something new keeps the brain active and engaged. Our communal spaces and occasional community projects also provide opportunities to socialise while stimulating the mind.

Enjoy Nature and Light
Even a short time outdoors in daylight can boost mood. Autumn in Plymouth brings beautiful local scenery; parks, waterfronts, and quiet neighbourhood walks.

Talk About Your Feelings
Sharing how you feel with someone you trust can be incredibly supportive. Our residents often tell us that having friendly staff and neighbours nearby makes all the difference when times are tough.

At Plymouth Charity Trust, we know that wellbeing is about more than housing. It’s about support, connection, and community. The homes we provide give residents the security to live independently, but our commitment doesn’t stop there. By fostering friendship, companionship, and engagement, we help older people maintain positive mental health through every season.

If you, or someone you care for, are feeling isolated or struggling with mood changes this winter, help is available:

Speak to your warden or local staff — they can advise on local activities, support groups, or wellbeing resources.

Contact local services such as Age UK Plymouth for advice, companionship programs, and guidance on mental health.

Reach out to friends, family, or neighbours — sometimes a simple chat is the first step to feeling better.

Remember: caring for your mind is just as important as caring for your body. A stable home, social connections, and small daily actions can help you stay emotionally well this autumn and winter. At Plymouth Charity Trust, we’re proud to support older people in Plymouth with safe homes, companionship, and opportunities to thrive all year round.

As the days get colder, a warm homemade meal can bring both comfort and calm. These three dishes are simple to make in a small kitchen, budget-friendly, and full of seasonal flavour.

1) Spiced Lentil & Coconut Dahl

A creamy, gently spiced dish that is filling, affordable and high in protein.

You need:
Red lentils • onion • curry powder or garam masala • stock cube • tinned tomatoes or coconut milk • oil or butter

How to make:

Soften chopped onion in a little oil or butter, then stir in curry powder.

Add lentils and either tinned tomatoes or coconut milk plus stock.

Simmer gently for 20–25 minutes until creamy and thick.

Serve with rice, naan or buttered toast. Add frozen spinach or peas at the end for extra goodness.

2) Autumn Vegetable Soup

Easy, versatile and ideal for using up leftover vegetables. It also freezes well for future meals.

You need:
Onion • carrot • potato • any other veg (leek, celery, squash etc.) • stock cube • oil or butter

How to make:

Chop the vegetables and soften briefly in butter or oil.

Add stock and simmer 20–25 minutes until tender.

Blend until smooth or leave chunky as you prefer.

3) Sausage, Apple & Onion Tray Bake

A one-tray meal with the sweet and savoury flavours of autumn.

You need:
Sausages • onions • apples • potatoes or squash • oil • honey or jam • mustard

How to make:

Place chopped veg, apples and sausages on a tray, drizzle with oil and roast at 190°C for 30-40 minutes.

Return to the oven until everything is golden and sticky.

This meal cooks on one tray, which makes washing up simple.

Simple meals, big comfort.

You do not need expensive ingredients to eat well in autumn.

A warm bowl of soup, a simple tray bake or a gently spiced dish can support both physical wellbeing and peace of mind through darker evenings.

At Plymouth Charity Trust, we know how much difference the smallest things can make to our wellbeing.

Spending time outdoors, even just a little, can lift your spirits, clear your head, and support a good night’s sleep.

Here in Plymouth, we are lucky to have a wealth of outdoor spaces, from the peaceful greenery of Central Park to the refreshing coastal walks along the Hoe. Even a brief moment outside in these familiar spaces can have a powerful impact on your mood and mental health, especially as we enjoy the crisp, golden days of late September.

Fresh air doesn’t always mean a long walk or a full day out. It could be as simple as popping to the shops, or sitting in your garden or on your balcony with a blanket and a good book for 10–15 minutes. Maybe even a short pause by the Tamar River, watching the boats drift by, or taking a slow stroll through one of Plymouth’s smaller local parks like Victoria Park or Trefusis Park. These little moments can bring a sense of calm, ease stress, and help improve your overall wellbeing.

Breathing in the fresh air and feeling the natural light on your face helps your body maintain its natural rhythm, which in turn can support healthier sleep. Walking along the Hoe promenade at sunrise or enjoying a few minutes on the coastal path can energise your body, lift your spirits, and leave you feeling more positive for the rest of the day. Even the sound of the waves and the sea breeze can be incredibly restorative.

Of course, here in Plymouth the weather can be changeable, especially as September moves towards autumn. A sudden shower or gusty wind doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the outdoors – a warm coat, scarf, and hat can make all the difference. And if it’s too chilly or wet to venture out, you can still reap the benefits: opening a window to let in the crisp Devon air, or enjoying a few minutes in a sunlit corner of your home, can bring a similar sense of refreshment and clarity.

Remember: small steps count. Whether it’s a gentle stroll along the Barbican, a moment sitting by the pond in Central Park, or a few deep breaths by an open window, these simple actions can make you feel more connected, healthier, and happier. Here in Plymouth, we are fortunate to have so many spaces to breathe, relax, and reconnect with nature, and even the briefest interaction with the outdoors in late September can be a gift to your wellbeing.

As the warmer weather has set in and the mornings are now much lighter in Plymouth, many people find it harder to get good quality sleep. Whether it’s the early sunshine waking you up too soon or the heat making it difficult to settle at night, the change in season can affect how rested you feel.

Sleep is important to your overall wellbeing. It helps with concentration, mood and staying active during the day. The good news is there are simple ways to improve your sleep, even when the nights are warm and bright.

Give yourself time to wind down before bed.

Simple ways to sleep better

Keep your bedroom cool and dark
Try closing curtains during the day to keep the heat out, and open windows in the evening once it cools down. Use a fan for better air flow and choose light, breathable bedding.

Stick to a regular routine
Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day can help your body get into a rhythm. It’s best to avoid long lie-ins or naps during the day, as they can make it harder to sleep later.

Wind down before bed
Give yourself time to relax before trying to sleep. A warm (not hot) shower, reading, or listening to gentle music can all help you feel ready for rest.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and big meals late in the day
Caffeine and alcohol can interrupt your sleep. Try to avoid these in the evening, and if you’re hungry before bed, go for a light snack instead of a heavy meal.

Limit screen time before sleep
Phones, tablets and TVs can all make it harder for your brain to switch off. Try turning off screens at least an hour before bed.

Get up if you can’t sleep
If you’re lying awake for a while, it can help to get up, go into another room and do something calming. Return to bed when you feel sleepy.

Stay active during the day
Gentle movement like walking, stretching or time in the garden can help your body feel naturally ready for sleep in the evening. Just try not to exercise too close to bedtime.

Looking after your wellbeing

At Plymouth Charity Trust, we provide a peaceful living environment where our residents feel supported and at ease. We understand that good sleep is part of feeling safe and well at home. If poor sleep is still affecting you, or you have any other concerns regarding your mental or physical wellbeing, it is always best to get the opinion of a medical professional.

Plan Wisely

Avoid sitting out during peak hours: Take walks or do activities in the early morning or evening—between 11am and 3pm is the hottest part of the day

Stay shaded: If you must be out, opt for shaded areas.

Dress for Comfort

Choose loose, light-coloured cotton clothing, which cools you more efficiently than dark or synthetic fabrics.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection (look for CE and UV400 labels)

Sun Protection & Hydration

Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, and don’t forget often-missed spots, like the top of the head

Bring a water bottle and drink regularly, even if you’re not thirsty take little sips. Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine, as these can dehydrate.

Home Comforts

Keep blinds/curtains closed during the day, and open windows early morning or late evening to cool your home.

Use a damp cloth on your neck or take a cool shower instead of relying on fans which can be expensive to run.

Store medications below 25 °C – consider cooling them in the fridge on very hot days.( Always check with your GP first)

Recognise & Respond to Heat Illness

Dehydration/Overheating signs: muscle cramps, confusion, tiredness, dark urine.

Heat exhaustion: headache, dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, fast pulse. If symptoms appear, move to a cool place, drink fluids, and cool with water. These should improve in ~30 minutes; if not, call NHS 111.

Heatstroke (emergency): confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness. Call 999 immediately and cool the person—do not give fluids to the unconscious.

Stay Connected

Check-in with neighbours, family or carers, especially during heat waves. Encourage mutual checks-in for safety .

Enjoy Sun-Healthy Activities

Plan gentle outdoor activities like early evening strolls in shaded parks.

Opt for hydrating snacks (fruits, salads, yogurt) to boost fluid intake.

If your home feels too wam, visit public cool spaces like libraries or community centres.

“The staff get to know their residents and they’re very passionate about looking after them and caring for them. I’m very happy here. Best thing I ever did.”

Stable housing like ours contributes to wellbeing in several key ways:

A Sense of Security
Knowing that you have a place that is safe, warm and affordable takes a weight off daily life. It allows residents to focus on what matters friendships, hobbies, health and family.

Independence with Reassurance
While our homes encourage independent living, support is never far away. Our wardens and staff are there when needed, without compromising privacy.

Connection to Community
Living in a familiar area close to amenities and services helps residents stay connected to the city they know and love. This continuity enhances confidence and wellbeing.

Peace of Mind for the Future
Knowing that living arrangements are stable helps reduce anxiety about the future, especially during retirement or after a loss of a partner.

Stable housing is not simply a physical space, it is a foundation for quality of life.
