<p>As the warmer weather has set in and the mornings are now much lighter in Plymouth, many people find it harder to get good quality sleep. Whether it’s the early sunshine waking you up too soon or the heat making it difficult to settle at night, the change in season can affect how rested you feel.</p>

<p>Sleep is important to your overall wellbeing. It helps with concentration, mood and staying active during the day. The good news is there are simple ways to improve your sleep, even when the nights are warm and bright.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Simple ways to sleep better</strong></h4>



<p><strong>Keep your bedroom cool and dark<br></strong> Try closing curtains during the day to keep the heat out, and open windows in the evening once it cools down. Use a fan for better air flow and choose light, breathable bedding.</p>



<p><strong>Stick to a regular routine</strong><strong><br></strong> Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day can help your body get into a rhythm. It’s best to avoid long lie-ins or naps during the day, as they can make it harder to sleep later.</p>



<p><strong>Wind down before bed</strong><strong><br></strong> Give yourself time to relax before trying to sleep. A warm (not hot) shower, reading, or listening to gentle music can all help you feel ready for rest.</p>



<p><strong>Avoid caffeine, alcohol and big meals late in the day</strong><strong><br></strong> Caffeine and alcohol can interrupt your sleep. Try to avoid these in the evening, and if you’re hungry before bed, go for a light snack instead of a heavy meal.</p>



<p><strong>Limit screen time before sleep</strong><strong><br></strong> Phones, tablets and TVs can all make it harder for your brain to switch off. Try turning off screens at least an hour before bed.</p>



<p><strong>Get up if you can’t sleep</strong><strong><br></strong> If you’re lying awake for a while, it can help to get up, go into another room and do something calming. Return to bed when you feel sleepy.</p>



<p><strong>Stay active during the day</strong><strong><br></strong> Gentle movement like walking, stretching or time in the garden can help your body feel naturally ready for sleep in the evening. Just try not to exercise too close to bedtime.</p>
