Finding Joy Outdoors This Autumn Plymouth

At Plymouth Charity Trust, we know how much difference the smallest things can make to our wellbeing.

Spending time outdoors, even just a little, can lift your spirits, clear your head, and support a good night’s sleep.

Here in Plymouth, we are lucky to have a wealth of outdoor spaces, from the peaceful greenery of Central Park to the refreshing coastal walks along the Hoe. Even a brief moment outside in these familiar spaces can have a powerful impact on your mood and mental health, especially as we enjoy the crisp, golden days of late September.

Fresh air doesn’t always mean a long walk or a full day out. It could be as simple as popping to the shops, or sitting in your garden or on your balcony with a blanket and a good book for 10–15 minutes. Maybe even a short pause by the Tamar River, watching the boats drift by, or taking a slow stroll through one of Plymouth’s smaller local parks like Victoria Park or Trefusis Park. These little moments can bring a sense of calm, ease stress, and help improve your overall wellbeing.

Breathing in the fresh air and feeling the natural light on your face helps your body maintain its natural rhythm, which in turn can support healthier sleep. Walking along the Hoe promenade at sunrise or enjoying a few minutes on the coastal path can energise your body, lift your spirits, and leave you feeling more positive for the rest of the day. Even the sound of the waves and the sea breeze can be incredibly restorative.

Of course, here in Plymouth the weather can be changeable, especially as September moves towards autumn. A sudden shower or gusty wind doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the outdoors – a warm coat, scarf, and hat can make all the difference. And if it’s too chilly or wet to venture out, you can still reap the benefits: opening a window to let in the crisp Devon air, or enjoying a few minutes in a sunlit corner of your home, can bring a similar sense of refreshment and clarity.

Remember: small steps count. Whether it’s a gentle stroll along the Barbican, a moment sitting by the pond in Central Park, or a few deep breaths by an open window, these simple actions can make you feel more connected, healthier, and happier. Here in Plymouth, we are fortunate to have so many spaces to breathe, relax, and reconnect with nature, and even the briefest interaction with the outdoors in late September can be a gift to your wellbeing.
