Our Almshouses offer sanctuary and security in the heart of Plymouth.

We currently have two historic buildings that offer a mixture of studio and one bedroom apartments and outdoor space. Grenville House is a new, purpose built facility that will be launching in 2023.

All the apartments offer similar quality of living. The only differences are – Lanyon House has studio apartments and a laundry room instead of washing machines in the kitchens. It also offers a larger communal courtyard garden. There is a service charge for Lanyon House due to the communal gas/electric metres. Grenville house being a new, purpose built facility will have brand new decor and more modern decor compared to the older historic buildings.

No, Almshouses support independent living and applications will not be considered if medical or full time care is required.

Absolutely, the safety and wellbeing of residents is our priority. The older houses went through modernisation to bring in line with today’s living standards. Each House is monitored by CCTV cameras and daily Warden visits, fire alarm systems and each apartment is provided with emergency care pull cords.

The history of Almshouses stretches back to Medieval times when religious orders cared for the poor. Originally called hospitals or bed houses, in the sense of hospitality and shelter. Today Almshouses are not focused on catering for the poor or the sick, but providing sanctuary and a safe environment for people who are in need of affordable accommodation. Yes of course, family and friends are welcome to visit. However, due to the apartment sizes and health and safety, we enforce a no overnight stay policy within individual apartments. However, Lanyon House does have a guest room which families can book to stay.
