Small Space Gardening: Simple Things You Can Grow on a Windowsill

Not everyone has a large garden, but that does not mean you cannot enjoy a little bit of gardening at home.

A few plants on a windowsill, balcony or small outdoor corner can brighten a room, add colour to your space and give you something enjoyable to look after day to day.

Here are a few simple ideas that work well in smaller homes or flats.

Herbs in the Kitchen

Herbs are one of the easiest things to grow indoors and can sit happily on a sunny kitchen windowsill.

Mint, basil, parsley and chives are all good choices for beginners and can be useful for cooking too. Even a small pot can last surprisingly well with regular watering and a little sunlight.

Many supermarkets and garden centres sell ready grown herb pots that can simply be transferred into a slightly larger container.

Spring Onions from Scraps

A simple and low cost idea is regrowing spring onions in a jar of water.

Place the white root ends into a small glass with enough water to cover the roots, then leave them on a windowsill. Fresh green shoots usually begin growing again within days.

It is a small but satisfying way to reuse food scraps while adding a little greenery indoors.

Small Flower Pots

Bright flowers can make a room feel cheerful, even in a small space.

Pansies, violas and miniature daffodils are all compact enough for small pots or window boxes. They are also fairly easy to care for and add colour throughout the season.

If you have a shared outdoor area, a few small containers grouped together can create a lovely corner without needing much space.

Aloe Vera and Easy Houseplants

For people who prefer lower maintenance plants, houseplants such as aloe vera, spider plants or succulents are often good options.

They do not need constant attention and can grow well indoors with occasional watering.

A simple plant on a shelf or windowsill can help a room feel more homely and personal.

Growing from Seeds

You do not need expensive equipment to grow from seed.

Old yoghurt pots, egg cartons or small recycled containers can all work well for starting seedlings indoors. Sunflowers, cress and sweet peas are popular choices because they grow quickly and are easy to manage.

This can also be a lovely activity to share with visiting grandchildren or family members.

Making a Space Feel Your Own

At Plymouth Charity Trust, we know the small personal touches often matter most when making somewhere feel like home.

Whether it is a few herbs in the kitchen, flowers on a windowsill or a favourite plant that has moved house with you over the years, gardening does not have to be large scale to be meaningful.

Sometimes the smallest spaces can still grow something lovely.
