On the bright and promising morning of March 18th, a significant event unfolded in the heart of Plymouth, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the community. The Breaking Ground ceremony held for Grenville House, a project aimed at providing independent living for longer for residents aged 60+, was a momentous occasion that brought together key stakeholders, partners, and supporters to celebrate the start of construction.

Plymouth Charity Trust trustees, alongside valued collaborators including ADG Architects, Ward Williams Associates, Plymouth Chronicle, Brand Biscuit Studio, Tom Carder Media and The Social Planner, gathered eagerly to witness this pivotal moment. With anticipation in the air, guests gathered as the Lord Mayor of Plymouth took centre stage, poised to cut the ribbon and officially declare the site open for construction.

Underneath the warm sun, amidst a backdrop of optimism and enthusiasm, the Lord Mayor addressed the gathered crowd, expressing heartfelt sentiments about the positive impact that Grenville House will have on the community. His words echoed the shared vision of creating a space where individuals can live independently for longer, with the need for accessible facilities paramount to the demographic of our residents, fostering a sense of empowerment and inclusion for all whilst upholding the values of the present day Almshouses.

One of our favourite quotes from the Lord Mayor – “I don’t believe I’ve worn high-vis and chains before”.

Dave Smith from Studio Toad, diligently scribed the entire event. His efforts will immortalise this historic occasion in a time capsule, destined to be placed within the walls of the new build. This thoughtful gesture serves as a testament to the significance of Grenville House and its enduring legacy for generations to come.

Following the ceremonial proceedings, attendees were invited to continue the discussions at the iconic Dome on Plymouth Hoe. Against the stunning backdrop of the sea, guests gathered for a delightful lunch and drinks, basking in the joy and camaraderie of the occasion. It was a moment of unity and reflection, as stakeholders came together to honour the collective efforts that had brought Grenville House from vision to reality.

The significance of the Breaking Ground event extends far beyond the ceremonial act of turning soil. It symbolises a commitment to progress, innovation, and community resilience. Grenville House represents more than just bricks and mortar; it embodies the values of independence, sanctuary, and stability that lie at the heart of the Plymouth Charity Trust’s mission.

As construction commences and Grenville House begins to take shape, it serves as a beacon of hope and possibility for the future. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when individuals and organisations unite in pursuit of a common goal. Through dedication, collaboration, and unwavering determination, Grenville House will soon stand as a testament to the transformative power of community-driven initiatives.

As we anticipate challenges and victories ahead, our commitment to Grenville House’s vision remains unwavering, thanks to our partners and community support.

Together, we’ll create a safe sanctuary for the elderly, fostering independence and well-being. Let’s carry the optimism of the Breaking Ground ceremony forward, driven by our shared vision. With gratitude for all who contributed, Plymouth Charity Trust will continue breaking new ground, forging a legacy of compassion and inclusion for generations to come.

As the festive season approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate the joy and warmth that come with spending time with loved ones. However, it’s crucial to recognise that Christmas can be a challenging time for some, particularly the elderly, who may find themselves grappling with feelings of loneliness and isolation.

In Britain, a concerning number of older individuals face this struggle during the holiday season, highlighting the need for collective efforts to ensure their wellbeing.

Loneliness among the elderly is a concern throughout the year, but it becomes especially pronounced during the Christmas season. According to recent statistics from Age UK, a leading charity dedicated to supporting older individuals, more than two million people aged 75 and older in Britain live alone, with nearly a million stating that they often go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour, or family member.

The festive season, meant to be a time of celebration and togetherness, can worsen and highlight these feelings of isolation. Factors such as the loss of spouses, distant family members, and physical limitations can contribute to a heightened sense of loneliness among the elderly during Christmas.

Loneliness doesn’t just affect mental well-being; it can also have severe consequences on physical health. Studies have shown that prolonged loneliness can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, leading to increased risks of conditions such as heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. Recognising the impact of loneliness on the elderly is the first step in fostering a community-driven approach to alleviate this issue.

There are steps that we as individuals, along with what we achieve here at Plymouth Charity Trust, can do:

Community Engagement Initiatives: Local communities much like the one we have created here at Plymouth Charity Trust, play a pivotal role in combating elderly loneliness. Encouraging conversation and involvement can provide the elderly with opportunities to socialise, share stories, and create meaningful connections

Volunteer Programs: Initiating volunteer programs during the Christmas season is an impactful way to connect with the elderly. Volunteers can offer companionship, assist with holiday preparations, or even organise transportation for those who may have difficulty getting around. Small gestures can make a significant difference in brightening someone’s Christmas.

Neighbourly Support Networks: Simple acts such as checking in on elderly neighbours, offering assistance with shopping, particularly in bad weather, or decorating, and sharing a cup of tea can go a long way in fostering a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation.

This Christmas, let us collectively strive to make a positive impact on the lives of the elderly in our communities. Loneliness can be an enemy, but with compassion, community engagement, and a commitment to fostering meaningful connections, we can bring warmth and joy to those who need it most.

By recognising the signs of elderly loneliness and taking proactive steps to address them, we can ensure that this festive season truly becomes a time of togetherness, love, and shared joy for everyone, regardless of age.

If you have a loved one aged 60+ and who is retired, who you think may benefit from becoming a resident here at Plymouth Charity Trust, please feel free to contact us.

We would also be very happy to pick up the phone to you at any time, by calling 01752 663107.

The rising cost of living is a concern that affects many families and individuals across the UK. In these trying times, financial pressures can have an impact on your ability to access essential services and maintain a good quality of life. While some may consider alternatives like home care or living with family as an option, Plymouth Charity Trust stands as a beacon of support, offering valuable assistance during this challenging period. In this post, we’ll explore how we can help you cope with the cost of living crisis and why it may be a preferable alternative to other options.

Before delving into the ways Plymouth Charity Trust can assist, it’s important to grasp the challenges posed by the cost of living crisis. With rising utility bills, housing costs, and everyday expenses, individuals and families are grappling with a higher cost of living. The situation is even more challenging for seniors and those with limited financial resources, making it essential to seek out viable solutions.

Why Alternatives Aren’t Always Ideal

Home Care: Home care is a common alternative for individuals who need assistance with daily living but wish to remain in their homes. While this option can provide a level of independence, it may come with a substantial price tag. The cost of hiring caregivers and managing the associated expenses can be overwhelming, making it less affordable for many.

Living with Family: While living with family can offer emotional support and financial relief, it’s not always a viable solution. Not everyone has the luxury of available family members who can provide care and accommodation. Additionally, living with family may not offer the independence and privacy that some individuals desire.

We are a long-established charity organisation with a rich history of serving the community, we stand as a supportive resource for those facing the cost of living crisis. Here’s how we can help:

Affordable Housing: We offer affordable housing options to individuals and families who may struggle to find suitable accommodations in the current housing market. These housing solutions are designed to meet diverse needs,, making it an excellent alternative for those affected by the cost of living crisis.

Community Support: Beyond providing affordable housing, here at the Plymouth Charity Trust we foster a strong sense of community among our residents. Living in one of our properties means being part of a community who can provide companionship and emotional support. This can help alleviate the loneliness that often accompanies financial difficulties.

Financial Assistance: Residents do not have to pay water rates and are entitled to a £7.50 per year concessionary TV Licence fee if the resident is under 75 years of age. For residents aged 75 or over we have a concessionary licence for you. The total rent qualifies for Housing Benefit and support costs are paid directly to us.

Independent Living: Choosing our accommodation allows you to maintain your independence while benefiting from a supportive community and financial relief. Unlike some alternative options, you can enjoy your own space and privacy while receiving the necessary help to ensure a good quality of life.

Almshouses have been a prominent part of the UK’s architectural and social landscape for centuries. These quaint, historic buildings often evoke images of bygone eras when charity and community support played a vital role in society. However, like many historical institutions, almshouses have evolved significantly over time, and their modern-day purpose may surprise those who still hold misconceptions about them.

In this post, we’ll explore the misconceptions surrounding almshouses, and shed light on how they are used today.

Misconception 1: Almshouses Are Religious Institutions

A common misconception is that almshouses are religiously affiliated or run by religious organisations. Historically, many almshouses were indeed founded by religious institutions, such as churches or monasteries. However, the landscape has evolved, and today’s almshouses are often secular, run by independent charities or trusts much like ours.

These modern almshouse organisations focus on providing housing and support to those in need, regardless of their religious beliefs. This inclusivity allows a broader range of individuals to benefit from simple but comfortable almshouse accommodation while maintaining the core values of charity and community support.

Misconception 2: Almshouses Are Outdated and Neglected

Some people mistakenly assume that almshouses are dilapidated relics of the past, abandoned and forgotten by society. However, like Plymouth Charity Trust, many almshouse charities have made substantial efforts to preserve and modernise their facilities.

In recent years, numerous almshouses have undergone extensive renovations to ensure that residents have access to safe, comfortable, and well-maintained housing. These updates often include modern amenities, such as central heating, accessible bathroom facilities, and communal spaces for social interaction.

Misconception 3: Almshouses Are Only for the Poor or Impoverished.

A prevalent misconception is that almshouses are reserved exclusively for the most disadvantaged members of society. While the historical purpose of almshouses was indeed to provide shelter and support to the poor, modern almshouses have expanded their eligibility criteria to ensure they remain up to date, relevant and able to help when needed .

We recognised that financial hardship can affect people from all walks of life. As a result, Plymouth Charity Trust adapted its policies to accommodate individuals as an added support to families facing various levels of financial strain.

Some people, often for the first time in their lives, face uncertainty, eviction and possible homelessness because of the changing nature of the private rental system and apparent lack of affordable housing. Our Almshouses now serve as a lifeline for those over 60 who may not qualify for traditional social housing but still require affordable good quality housing options.

Misconception 4: Almshouses Are Isolated Communities

In the past, almshouses were often perceived as secluded and isolated communities, where residents lived in relative solitude. This misconception overlooks the sense of community and camaraderie that many modern almshouses actively promote.

Whilst totally respecting people’s right to privacy, our almshouses offer communal spaces and support services designed to foster a sense of belonging among residents. These initiatives aim to combat loneliness and promote social interaction, enhancing the quality of life for those living in our almshouse accommodations.

Almshouses in the UK have come a long way from their historical origins. While they were once primarily associated with charity for the elderly and the poor, modern almshouses have evolved to cater to a more diverse range of individuals and needs. They are no longer religiously affiliated, neglected, or isolated communities. Instead, they strive to ensure they continue to meet the changing demands of society, providing safe, comfortable, and affordable housing while fostering a sense of community. The locations of Almshouses are typically in the centre of towns and cities, providing easy access to local amenities and wholly support independent living.

It’s essential to dispel the misconceptions surrounding almshouses to ensure that those in need are aware of the opportunities available to them. By embracing their modern role in society, almshouses continue to play a crucial part in addressing housing inequalities and providing a supportive environment for individuals and families facing various challenges in their lives.

The Grenville House project has been a long time in the making, and we were thrilled to finally unveil it at our launch event on March 29th. The event was held at The Loft on the beautiful Plymouth barbican, a fitting location for such an important occasion.

We were delighted to share the event with our fantastic partners, including ADG Architects, Ward Williams Associates and Brand Biscuit Studio. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces in attendance, including local councillors and the Lord Mayor, who showed their support for the project.

The atmosphere at the event was truly electric, with everyone buzzing with excitement about the project. The room was filled with chatter and laughter as guests mingled and caught up with one another. The sublime buffet, prepared by The Loft, was a real highlight, with guests enjoying a delicious buffet and sipping on refreshing drinks as they admired the stunning view of the Plymouth waterfront.

As the evening progressed, we settled down to watch the documentary that had been prepared by Brand Biscuit Studio to document not only the Grenville House project from start to finish but with Plymouth Charity Trust having been going for over 400 years, we wanted to get PCT in the minds of the local community, and provide information on the importance of Grenville House and what it stands to achieve which is to provide accessible living to encourage living independently for as long as possible.

As the lights dimmed and the film began to play, there was a hush that fell over the room. It was incredible to see the transformation that the Grenville House project had undergone, from a plot of land in desperate need of life to a beautiful, modern space that would provide safe, comfortable and affordable housing for the elderly members of our community.

The documentary was incredibly moving, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house by the time it had finished. It was a real testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the project.

After the documentary had finished, we took a moment to reflect on what we had achieved, with our Chairman Steve taking to the stage to talk to us all. The Grenville House project has been a huge undertaking, but it was all worth it to see the smiles on the faces of the people who know what an asset this will be to Plymouth. We are proud to have been a catalyst to something so special, and we know that the impact of our work will be felt for years to come.

We’re thankful to the Lord Mayor for her kind words, here is a snippet for you – ‘As honorary Patron of the Trust I say thank you, but as a Ward Councillor, to really get to see, with the other councillors here in the room, some of the hardship that our people have to deal with, it’s really amazing that this project is going ahead.”

As the night drew to a close, and after a little bit of a dance, we said our goodbyes and headed out into the crisp Plymouth evening air. It had been a truly wonderful evening, filled with laughter, good food, and a real sense of achievement. We know that the Grenville House project and associated Grenville Church will be a success, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for the residents wellbeing, who will very much benefit from the new and tailored facilities.

The Grenville House project launch event was an absolute triumph. We couldn’t have asked for a better location, better partners, or better guests. It was a night that we will never forget, and we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far. We hope that the success of this project will inspire others to get involved in their local communities and make a difference wherever they can.

Grenville Church, situated in a residential area of Plymouth, was built after the Second World War to replace a terrace of houses that were destroyed by bombing. Plans are currently underway to transform the disused church building into purpose-built accommodation for individuals over the age of 60 who find themselves in need of affordable accommodation and who need a lifeline to retain their independence to enjoy safe and happy living.

The proposed project, supported by Ward Williams Associates and ADG Architects, is still in the planning stages and involves removing the church and replacing it with five one-bedroom self-contained apartments. These apartments will be specifically designed to provide convenient, comfortable, and affordable accommodation for residents with mobility issues.

There is a £3m investment for the build and part of that is regenerating this residential area, including supporting the local elderly community, which otherwise would be a derelict property. ADG and Ward Williams Associates have collaborated closely with Plymouth Charity Trust to create a design that aligns with the charity’s goals. The resulting high-quality property reflects the residential character of the surrounding area.

The proposals for the apartments will feature highly insulated fabric and low air leakage rates to reduce energy consumption and heat losses. They will also benefit from a southern aspect, ensuring good light levels and passive solar gain during the winter. In addition, the building is proposed to be equipped with highly energy-efficient Air Source Heat Pumps to serve the domestic hot water and space heating demand for the building.

Accessibility and adaptability will be essential components of the project’s proposals to ensure that the apartments meet the needs of future occupants. The aim of the project is to improve the city’s housing stock by providing high-quality, affordable, and rented properties that cater to residents with unique and pressing needs.

Upon completion, the Grenville Church project is expected to support numerous people in need and strengthen the charity’s connection to the local community.

Planning permission is still pending, and the project is anticipated to be completed in the coming years.

Overall, the Grenville Church redevelopment project is a compelling demonstration of how disused buildings can be transformed into essential housing for vulnerable individuals. By working closely with local communities and charitable organisations, developers can create projects that not only meet the needs of residents but also contribute positively to the surrounding area.

Our founding pillars underpin everything that we do at Plymouth Charity Trust and at the heart of these is Community. Based on the ideology that by giving back and supporting surrounding people and places it creates thriving and diverse areas for our residents to live.

We believe that by supporting the enhancement of facilities at our chosen local schools it encourages young people to understand the importance of community, which in turn creates opportunities to give back and to be part of something bigger.

With three projects successfully completed already we are proud of the positive difference we are making within our surrounding area.

Larger and more modern projectors at Prince Rock Primary School have revolutionised assemblies, group and reward time for the children. Headteacher, Ms Brake, remarks –

“The new projectors have really been transformative for the children, we use them every day! And we wouldn’t have been able to replace the old ones without the help of Plymouth Charity Trust.”

An interactive history timeline in an outdoor space at Holy Cross Primary School has encouraged the pupils to have educational conversions about learning before they enter the classroom. The children love the visual element to it as it stretches all the way around the playground! Headteacher, Mrs Gill, states –

“The children interact with it all the time when they’re out playing as well, it’s really informal and interactive. The application process was really quick, the funds even allowed us to repaint the wall too. It’s really great to see the community support locally.”

Children at Salisbury Road now have an inviting and appealing library to choose books from instead of an empty room with no carpet. Headteacher, Mrs Moran, comments –

“As a school, we are really keen to promote the love of reading so that children are enthusiastic and become lifelong readers. Plymouth Charity Trust are really passionate about our local community and supporting families and our children. They were absolutely fantastic.”

With such success and wonderful stories behind us we aren’t stopping there and are pleased to announce that we will be supporting Salisbury Road with the development of their Urban Garden. A space for the pupils to get stuck in and back to nature within the city environment. Look out for updates on our social media channels as we show how this progresses.

One of our founding pillars is to continually support independent living. After 400 years of championing this mission, we now find ourselves in the position to develop a purpose-built facility with our residents’ needs at its heart.

Due to the design, layout and listing limitations, our current properties are not capable of further adaption to support the enhanced needs of some of our residents who have mobility issues or any new residents with disabilities. Some existing residents find themselves in a position of either having to struggle on or are faced with the likely alternative of going into a residential home and losing their independence. This has been an ongoing concern for the Trustees for many years.

We have started an exciting project which is unique to the Plymouth Charity Trust and will support residents who, through physical infirmity, are unable to live safely within our current properties. We will be able to offer them the opportunity to move to the new Grenville House development so they can maintain their independence in purpose-built accommodation and continue to enjoy safe and happy living. It is also expected that there will be vacancies for new residents, including for those needing the more focused provision that Grenville House can offer.

We are extremely proud to be working with local award-winning architects ADG and being supported by Ward Williams Associates on this project. The scheme has been sensitively designed using traditional building materials. Modern techniques have been applied to minimise its environmental impact, for example, thermally efficient heat pumps will be used to heat the entire property instead of gas. The building will meet both local and governmental planning and environmental requirements.

Location

Following its closure, the Trust purchased the Friary Vaults Social Club with the intention of developing a new three-storey building on the site to provide 11 self-contained one-bedroom apartments, specially designed to suit independent living for those over 60 years of age. It also has an on- site staff office and meeting room adjacent to ancillary accommodation on the ground floor.

It is an exciting opportunity to redevelop and reinvigorate the site of this redundant property, which is conveniently situated close to our main office at Heles Terrace, whilst providing for those in need and protecting a well-established residential area. All the flats are entirely to meet Social Housing Local Needs – none of them will be for private rent or purchase and it is being solely funded by the Charity.

The final design submission for full Planning Permission was submitted in 2021 and we are looking forward to building works commencing towards the end of 2022 with completion at the beginning of 2024.
